ABA matrix training arranges two or more skill components on separate axes, combines them into cells, directly teaches selected cells, and probes whether untaught combinations emerge. The goal is flexible recombination, rather than memorizing every cell. Families should ask which components are already known, which combinations receive teaching, how probes remain independent, and how access, assent, burden, maintenance, and direct-teaching decisions are handled.
See the structure
One axis might list actions and another objects. Their intersections create combinations such as wash cup, carry cup, wash plate, and carry plate. The team identifies trained cells and probe cells before teaching begins.
Define the outcome
The implementation tutorial describes matrix training as a planning system for multicomponent responses. Correct performance on an untrained cell after selected cells are taught is evidence of recombinative generalization under the stated conditions.
Keep the evidence proportional
A three-child communication study found that all participants learned taught noun-verb targets and showed varying amounts of untaught responding. A systematic review included 26 single-case studies with 65 participants. Results support the method while leaving individual outcomes uncertain.
Protect access and goals
The Ethics Code addresses client involvement, assent when applicable, assessment, risk, and evaluation. ASHA supports continual AAC access. Matrix components should reflect meaningful, accessible communication or skills.
A practical example
Nia knows the words open, close, box, and bag. The plan teaches open box and close bag. In later independent probes, Nia demonstrates close box in 2/3 opportunities and open bag in 3/3. Each untaught combination keeps its own count.
Questions families can use
Which components are known? Which cells are taught? Which remain untouched before probes? What response counts? Are prompts absent during generalization probes? What happens when a combination fails to emerge?
