Matrix learning problems can reflect weak component skills, unclear or unnatural combinations, insufficient direct teaching, inaccessible materials or responses, narrow stimulus control, inconsistent partner delivery, contaminated probes, competing demands, or poor target value. Review the grid and each component before adding trials. Some combinations may need direct teaching, another arrangement, interdisciplinary input, or removal from the plan.

Locate matrix learning problems

Check component performance in isolation and combinations, then inspect the cue, materials, response definition, prompts, consequences, exposure, access, partner behavior, probe order, and accidental teaching. The tutorial offers a structured grid review. Ask the person which parts are burdensome.

Separate component and combination errors

If the action word itself is unavailable, more recombination probes cannot establish it. If each component is usable alone but breaks down in combinations, review order, grammar, competing stimulus control, motor demands, and whether the combination is meaningful.

Use the comparison evidence

The comparison study found that component-plus-combination teaching produced the strongest yield for two participants, while combination-only teaching did so for another. The authors call for more research, so an individualized phase comparison is more useful than a universal rule.

Protect the person during repair

A practical example

Ravi masters three taught combinations but scores 0/6 on held-out cells. Component checks show one location word at 1/4 and two object words at 4/4. The team repairs the weak component and preserves four untouched cells for a later probe.

Questions families can use

Which component is weak? Was the cell meaningful? Was communication available? Did the probe accidentally teach? Did materials control the response too narrowly? Which cells still permit a clean comparison?
