A matrix training grid places separable skill components on two or more axes and combines them into meaningful cells. Build it by defining the functional skill, verifying each component, screening every combination for sense and safety, marking baseline and teaching cells, and preplanning probes. Version the grid whenever components, materials, response definitions, teaching procedures, or decision rules change.
Build the matrix training grid
Name the person-selected outcome first. Choose components that can combine naturally. List one component set across rows and another down columns, then inspect every intersection. Remove combinations that are nonsensical, unsafe, inaccessible, or outside the goal.
Check component status
Test whether each word, symbol, movement, or item is already usable in the relevant context. A familiar noun in isolation may still be difficult in a two-part direction. Record known, emerging, and unknown components separately.
Mark teaching and probe cells
The tutorial describes diagonal or nonoverlap selection and overlap or stepwise options. The grid should show exactly which combinations receive instruction and which remain untrained for later probes.
Assign qualified decisions
The BACB outline covers assessment, goal selection, teaching, generalization, and evaluation. The Ethics Code addresses competence, involvement, assent when applicable, and documentation. ASHA supports communication access. A qualified clinician selects and interprets the design within scope.
A practical example
Omar's 3 by 3 grid combines three clothing items with hang, fold, and carry. The team removes hang socks as a poor fit for the household routine, documents the eight usable cells, teaches three selected combinations, and preserves five for probes.
Questions families can use
Does every cell make sense? Are the component skills verified? Which cells are held out? Is the response accessible? Who approves changes? Can the record reconstruct the version used on each date?
