A matrix training diagonal is a selected set of cells in which each row and column component usually appears once. Teaching those nonoverlapping combinations can cover all components with relatively few targets. It is a target-selection strategy, rather than proof of generalization. Some learners need overlapping combinations, direct component teaching, or another sequence before untaught cells emerge.
Read a matrix training diagonal
In a 3 by 3 action-object grid, a diagonal might contain wash cup, carry book, and point plate. Each action and object appears once. The six remaining cells can be reserved for independent probes.
Separate diagonal from overlap training
Diagonal or nonoverlap teaching pairs each component with one partner in that set. Overlap or stepwise teaching repeats a component with another partner, which can help establish control by each component. The plan should name the arrangement.
Use comparative evidence carefully
A procedure-comparison study involved three autistic children. For two, teaching components alongside combinations produced the most untaught targets; for the third, combination-only teaching produced the greatest proportion. The result supports individualized testing.
Check prerequisites and access
The tutorial recommends assessing component and combination performance before target selection. ASHA supports AAC availability, including vocabulary, positioning, motor access, and partner support needed for each response. The Ethics Code addresses client involvement and evaluation.
A practical example
Tess receives three diagonal targets across shape and location words. Baseline on six reserved combinations is 0/6. After teaching, probes are 2/6. The team adds a second overlapping set and reports the later probe as a new phase.
Questions families can use
Does the selected diagonal cover every component? Were components known beforehand? Are held-out cells truly untaught? What evidence triggers overlap teaching? Are results separated by phase?
