Matrix training probes test defined combinations before teaching and again after selected cells are mastered. Keep trained and untaught cells labeled, use the same relevant stimuli, cue, response window, ordinary access supports, and scoring rule, and withhold teaching prompts on independent probes. Record every due cell, response, exclusion, and prior exposure so the result supports a specific within-matrix or across-matrix claim.
Design held-out probes
Create the probe list before teaching. Mark baseline, postteaching, maintenance, and transfer phases. Randomize or balance order when appropriate, state the consequence for a response, and prevent the probe from becoming repeated direct instruction.
Define the unit
One opportunity is one named combination presented under its eligibility rule. A correct response meets the operational definition within the window. Report independent correct cells divided by eligible probe cells due, plus all invalid or missed opportunities.
Separate generalization claims
The tutorial distinguishes probes inside the trained matrix from tests in another matrix. The young-child study evaluated trained and untaught noun-verb combinations, with results varying by participant and successive matrix.
Preserve access and assent
The Ethics Code addresses involvement, assent when applicable, assessment, and evaluation. ASHA supports AAC availability. Withdrawal ends the nonemergency probe under the plan and remains visible in reporting.
A practical example
Kai has ten postteaching probe cells. Eight are presented with the correct materials and AAC available. Kai answers 5/8 independently. One cell was accidentally practiced and one lacked its symbol; both receive separate exclusion reasons.
Questions families can use
Were probe cells held out? Did the cue or response form change? Were prompts absent? Which ordinary supports stayed available? Are missing and invalid probes visible? Is the claim limited to the tested matrix?
