How ABA May Support Updating Plans When Circumstances Change

Name the change trigger

Examples include a canceled ride, missing staff member, new allergy information, changed work shift, broken device, unavailable room, different deadline, or the person's changed preference. State which triggers allow routine adaptation and which require a hold or qualified decision.

Pause the affected step

Mark the old instruction as unavailable for the relevant context. Preserve the prior version and reason for change when the history matters. Avoid asking the person to continue a known outdated or unsafe step while adults seek approval.

Route the decision and publish the revision

Identify the client, caregiver, clinician, employer, school, payer, property, transportation, or emergency role that can decide. Update the accessible tool, effective time, affected people, backup, and acknowledgment route.

Keep communication and evaluation active

The Ethics Code addresses competence, client involvement, assent when applicable, risk, documentation, and evaluation. ASHA supports AAC access. The TCO includes data-based modification but grants no external authority.

A practical example

Andre uses eight travel plans. Two routes change. Both old versions are held, the transit source is checked, and Andre receives an accessible update before departure in 2/2. Six unchanged plans remain a separate cohort.

Questions families can use

What changed? Which steps are affected? Who can decide? Is the old version clearly held? When does the new version start? Can the person understand, question, or reject optional changes?
