ABA handoff skills can support giving the right work, item, or information to the right person at the right time, confirming receipt, identifying open issues, and repairing a failed transfer. The handoff must respect privacy, consent, authority, and organizational rules. Define what the recipient needs, what stays private, who remains responsible, and when safety or qualified review overrides the routine.
Define the handoff unit
Name the work, item, message, recipient, destination, due event, required context, open question, and completion evidence. A placed object, sent message, delivered explanation, and confirmed receipt are different states.
Use an accessible format
Choose speech, AAC, text, form, checklist, photograph, labeled container, secure system, or demonstration that both people can use. Provide a template for what is done, what remains, what changed, and what response is needed.
Protect privacy and authority
Share only information permitted and needed for the recipient's role. A handoff does not transfer clinical, safety, payment, legal, school, workplace, or caregiving authority unless the governing source does so. Keep sensitive records in the approved route.
Require confirmation and repair
The Ethics Code addresses confidentiality, communication, documentation, client involvement, and continuity for covered analysts. ASHA supports AAC access. Define the confirmation window, backup recipient, failed-delivery alert, and owner until acceptance.
A practical example
Sofia completes six equipment handoffs after a club. The recipient and secure checklist are available for 5/6. Sofia delivers and receives confirmation in 4/5; one stays open after a device failure. It remains in the denominator.
Questions families can use
What exactly transfers? Who is the correct recipient? Which information is permitted? What proves receipt? Who remains responsible while it is open? What backup and repair route apply?
