How Should ABA Shaping Data Be Reported?

Build interpretable ABA shaping data

For each opportunity, record the natural cue, current threshold, measured response, result, prompt, programmed consequence, and material or setting condition. Duration, distance, accuracy, force, and complexity require different units. Avoid turning them into one generic success score.

Lock each denominator

Criterion-meeting rate equals eligible responses meeting the current threshold divided by eligible opportunities under that threshold. Prompted performance uses its own category. Fidelity equals correctly implemented steps divided by steps due. Invalid equipment, missing access, safety stops, and withdrawal remain visible by reason.

Version every criterion change

Close the old series with its effective dates and decision note. Start a new series for a new threshold, dimension, prompt rule, reinforcement rule, material, or setting change when interpretation would otherwise blur. The Ethics Code supports documentation and data-based evaluation for covered people. Preserve the raw evidence.

Avoid broad research claims

The gradual-change review shows why shaping needs response-requirement records distinct from other gradual procedures. The three-participant vocal study used its own mastery and response definitions. Those denominators do not transfer to a family plan.

A practical example

Noor has ten eligible grocery-scanner opportunities at the five-centimeter alignment criterion: six meet it independently, two after a visual prompt, one misses, and one is declined. Staff deliver the planned consequence after 7 of 8 due responses. Report 6/10 independent, 2/10 prompted, 1/10 missed, 1/10 declined, and 7/8 fidelity.

Questions families can use

Which criterion and version produced the data? What is the unit? Are prompts and declines separate? Which opportunities were invalid? Does the percentage include raw counts? What does the person report?
