ABA shaping across settings may require different starting points, materials, response effort, ordinary supports, staff roles, safety conditions, and criterion versions. The meaningful terminal response can also differ by context. Families can ask for a local baseline, qualified owner, accessible response, progression rule, and separate data series in each setting. Performance in one place does not automatically establish readiness, authority, or generalization elsewhere.

Map ABA shaping across settings

For home, school, clinic, work, or community, record the natural cue, response definition, starting approximation, terminal response, changing dimension, ordinary supports, person implementing, criterion rule, and effective date. Keep setting access and local authority visible.

Decide what should remain aligned

A cross-setting goal may share a functional outcome while using different materials or response forms. Ask whether identical topography is necessary. Communication, mobility, sensory, visual, and organizational tools can remain part of independent performance.

Test generalization separately

A new setting is an exposure until a predeclared opportunity occurs and the response is measured. Report familiar teaching trials apart from transfer probes. If another person adds an unfamiliar prompt, record that condition instead of calling the response independent.

Use sources as a map

The gradual-change review separates shaping from stimulus fading, chaining, and schedule thinning. The BACB outline covers shaping, generalization, maintenance, contextual fit, and evaluation as examination content. The Ethics Code adds competence, collaboration, client involvement, and risk duties for covered people.

A practical example

Maya sorts compost at home using color-coded bins and at a job site using word-and-icon labels. Baselines and starting criteria differ. Both settings preserve the chosen visual supports, train their own partners, and keep data separate before testing new bins.

Questions families can use

What differs here? Is the terminal response truly the same? Which ordinary supports stay? Who owns this version? Which data are teaching and which are generalization probes?
