ABA account review skills can support checking a defined account and time period, recognizing expected transactions, marking unfamiliar activity, protecting account information, and contacting the provider through a trusted route. The account owner or authorized person decides what action to take. Current issuer instructions and legal deadlines vary, so suspicious items should be routed promptly and left open until a documented resolution.

Define the review cohort

Name the account, owner, authorized reviewer, statement or date range, expected transaction sources, and the information the person can safely view. Use privacy controls that avoid exposing balances or identifiers to unauthorized staff or household members.

Classify without guessing

Mark each transaction expected, unfamiliar, duplicate, amount mismatch, recurring, refund pending, cash withdrawal, fee, or needs more information. Merchant names can differ from storefront names, so uncertainty should trigger verification instead of an accusation.

Use the provider's trusted route

CFPB recommends monitoring accounts and reporting suspicious transactions quickly. The CFPB fraud hub provides consumer paths for unauthorized transactions and other fraud concerns. Use the statement, official app, trusted website, or known provider number and keep dates and reference numbers.

Preserve authority and support

The Ethics Code addresses confidentiality, competence, client involvement, and documentation. ASHA supports AAC access. A supporter may help compare records while leaving action to the account owner or person with valid authority.

A practical example

Hugo reviews 20 transactions in a locked statement cohort. Sixteen are matched, three need merchant-name research, and one appears unauthorized. All 20 retain a state and owner; the unexplained four never disappear from an accuracy percentage.

Questions families can use

Which account and date range are in scope? Who may review and act? Which transactions are expected? How is uncertainty recorded? What trusted provider route applies? Which deadline and open status need tracking?
