ABA pet care skills can support a person in choosing appropriate tasks such as measuring food, refreshing water, preparing supplies, grooming under guidance, walking with supervision, or reporting a concern. The animal's welfare comes first. A responsible adult and veterinarian determine the care plan, health needs, safe handling, and when the person, animal, or environment is not ready for practice.
Match the task to both participants
Ask which animal and task interest the person. Consider the animal's species, temperament, health, training, body language, feeding plan, allergies, handling tolerance, and legal or housing rules alongside the person's communication, mobility, sensory, and safety needs.
Define adult and veterinary ownership
Name who decides food amount, medication, exercise, grooming, equipment, medical care, and emergency action. ABA staff can teach a selected routine within competence; they cannot create veterinary instructions or transfer adult responsibility to a learner.
Use clear start and stop conditions
Practice only when the animal, person, supervisor, environment, and equipment are ready. Stop for fear, pain, aggression, escape risk, unsafe weather, damaged equipment, illness, contamination, or withdrawal by the person. Provide a way to report concerns.
Protect communication and humane treatment
The Ethics Code addresses competence, client involvement, assent when applicable, medical needs, risk, and evaluation. ASHA supports AAC access. The CASP public summary supports individualized goals.
A practical example
Samira chooses to refresh a dog's water. Adult approval, clean supplies, a calm animal, and AAC are ready in 6/7 opportunities. Samira completes 5/6 and asks for help once. The dog's illness keeps one opportunity outside task-performance data.
Questions families can use
Does the person want this task? Is the animal ready? Who owns the care plan? What handling, hygiene, equipment, or supervision limits apply? Which signals stop practice? How can the person report a concern?
