ABA home entry skills can support locating the correct entrance, using an accessible key, fob, code, intercom, or smart lock, securing the door as agreed, and responding when access fails. The resident or property authority controls permission. Protect codes and location information, define safe storage and replacement, keep a reachable backup person, and preserve emergency exit and response routes.
Map the actual entry sequence
Record arrival point, lighting, path, weather, steps or ramp, door identification, lock type, hand use, bags, timing, visitors, pets, and what happens after entry. Test the sequence at the times and conditions the person expects to use it.
Choose accessible credentials
Compare key shape, grip, tether, fob, keypad, phone, biometric option, intercom, or authorized supporter entry. Confirm battery, connectivity, reach, vision, motor, memory, and privacy. Avoid writing an address beside an unsecured key or exposing a code during practice.
Define permission and security
List who may issue, copy, share, reset, store, or revoke each credential. Separate resident permission, lease or program rules, staff access, visitor access, and emergency authority. A teaching plan cannot grant someone a legal or contractual right to enter.
Build a failed-entry plan
Keep AAC and a charged contact route available. ASHA supports AAC access. The Ethics Code addresses confidentiality, competence, client involvement, assent when applicable, and risk. Define a safe waiting place, backup contact, property route, lost-key response, emergency threshold, and when to call emergency services.
A practical example
Omar practices eight arrivals. The path, lock, credential, phone, and backup contact are ready in 7/8. Omar enters and secures the door in 6/7 and uses the backup once. The dead smart-lock battery remains a system failure.
Questions families can use
Who authorizes entry? Which credential is accessible? How are codes and location protected? What happens if a key is lost or technology fails? Is the waiting place safe? Can emergency exits open independently?
