ABA paratransit pickup skills can support reading the confirmed pickup window, preparing at the locally required time, waiting in a safe and accessible location, recognizing the assigned vehicle when the local system provides identifiers, keeping communication and mobility supports ready, and contacting dispatch when the trip falls outside the provider's rule. Local policy defines on-time, late, missed, and no-show states.
Start from the confirmed trip
Record travel date, origin, destination, requested time, negotiated time, pickup-window start and end, vehicle information when supplied, rider contact, companion or attendant, mobility device, fare, and dispatch route. Use the provider's final confirmation rather than an earlier draft.
Choose an accessible waiting place
Confirm the exact pickup point, building entrance, visibility, weather protection, curb access, seating, lighting, and safe distance from traffic. Keep the person free to move, communicate, use the restroom, or seek help according to the local waiting rule and individual needs.
Understand the source of the window
The FTA ADA Circular discusses negotiated pickup times and the practical use of pickup windows. Each transit entity publishes its own window and rider procedures, which should be recorded verbatim with the source date.
Keep communication and mobility supports ready
Maintain AAC access, charged devices, mobility equipment, backup contact information, and a way to identify the trip. Contact dispatch through the official route and record time, reference, and instruction when status changes.
A practical example
Isa reviews six pickups. Five have a confirmed window, accessible waiting point, ready mobility and communication supports, and dispatch contact. One pickup location has an unexpected stair. Pickup readiness is 5 of 6; the inaccessible location is routed to the provider before travel.
Questions families can use
Ask what exact window applies, where the vehicle will meet the rider, which supports must be ready, how the vehicle is identified, when dispatch should be contacted, and how late, missed, cancellation, and no-show states differ. ABA paratransit pickup skills follow the local rule.
