ABA project planning skills can support defining a wanted outcome, identifying milestones, estimating resources and time, finding dependencies, assigning help, checking progress, and revising the plan. The project should fit the person's priorities and daily life. Keep rest, school, work, health, money, access, and other commitments visible, and avoid turning every incomplete milestone into a behavior problem.

Define the finished result

Ask what the person wants to create, organize, learn, or complete and how they will know it is useful. A model, trip, application, room change, event, or portfolio each needs different evidence, people, materials, approvals, and time.

Map milestones and dependencies

List a small number of concrete checkpoints. Mark steps that require money, transportation, another person's response, qualified approval, equipment, or an earlier task. A dependent step cannot become overdue while its prerequisite is unavailable.

Build a working review cycle

Choose how often the person wants to check progress, which data are helpful, and how to change scope, sequence, supports, or dates. Keep incomplete and blocked items visible with owners and next actions.

Protect fit and choice

The TCO covers observable goals, task analysis, contextual fit, and data-based modification as examination content. The Ethics Code addresses client involvement, assent when applicable, risk, and evaluation. ASHA supports AAC access.

A practical example

Inez plans a six-milestone photo book. Materials and required family responses are ready for five milestones. Inez completes four, changes the layout for one, and keeps one blocked pending permission. Report ready, completed, revised, and blocked milestones separately.

Questions families can use

Does the outcome matter to the person? Which milestones are concrete? What dependencies exist? Who owns each approval? Are rest and other commitments protected? How can the person reduce, pause, or redesign the project?
