BACB 2027 BCBA BCaBA certification requirements take effect January 1, 2027. BACB says a complete application, payment, and required documents must arrive by December 31, 2026 to be reviewed under the 2022 requirements. The official transition update and credential-specific documents change pathways, coursework, fieldwork, forms, and maintenance details, so employers should map each trainee individually.
Classify the credential and application window
Separate BCBA and BCaBA candidates, current certificants, supervisors, and university contacts. For each trainee, record intended credential, pathway, degree program, coursework, fieldwork type, accrued hours, verification forms, planned application date, payment, transcript route, and BACB receipt. An internal target date does not establish that the BACB received a complete application by December 31.
Map BCBA and BCaBA pathways separately
The 2027 BCBA requirements use Pathway 1 for qualifying accredited or recognized graduate programs and Pathway 2 for behavior-analytic coursework. The 2027 BCaBA requirements use their own accredited bachelor's-level Pathway 1 and coursework Pathway 2. Degree, program status, dates, content hours, and attestation duties differ. Do not reuse a BCBA checklist for BCaBA candidates or infer eligibility from an employer's job title.
Audit fieldwork by the applicable requirement set
For 2027 BCBA applications, the overview retains 2,000 supervised or 1,500 concentrated hours and raises observation minimums to cumulative minutes per supervisory period. The BCaBA overview uses 1,300 or 800 hours with its own supervision percentages and unrestricted-activity minimum. Use the complete current handbook and transition guide; a summary table cannot resolve every mixed-period or supervisor scenario.
Control forms and source versions
BACB identifies 2027 monthly and final fieldwork verification forms for applicants after the transition. Use the BCBA transition guidance for the applicable form and requirement set, then preserve supervisor qualifications, contracts, monthly forms, final forms, observations, individual and group supervision, unrestricted activities, and corrections. Never alter a signed form or backfill an event from memory. Route disputes and unusual histories through BACB's published process.
A fictional transition audit
Renee locks 36 trainee records across BCBA and BCaBA pathways. Twenty-seven have a sourced pathway, degree state, coursework map, fieldwork rule set, correct forms, supervisor qualification, application plan, and risk note. Transition completeness is 27 of 36, or 75%. Three candidates use an unsupported pathway assumption, two lack form-version evidence, two have coursework timing questions, and two need BACB guidance.
Separate certification from employment and payer status
BACB eligibility or certification does not by itself establish state licensure, Medicaid enrollment, payer credentialing, scope under an employer, authorization, or independent practice authority. Track those systems separately. Supervisors should not promise application approval or direct trainees to provide services outside current credentials and law. Candidate-specific questions belong with BACB, the relevant regulator, and qualified counsel.
