Total-task presentation

When should total-task presentation be used? Total-task presentation may fit a meaningful multistep routine when the learner can participate across much of the sequence and repeated whole-task practice is feasible. During each opportunity, the learner attempts every step, receiving the planned prompt where needed. Selection should consider current skills, task length, effort, safety, available time, prompt needs, assent, and whether whole-chain practice produces useful learning and everyday performance.

Every step receives an opportunity

A task analysis describes the routine as observable actions. During total-task presentation, the learner moves through the entire chain on each teaching opportunity. The teacher waits at each step and provides the assigned help when needed.

For packing a swim bag, steps might include checking a visual list, choosing a towel, adding a swimsuit, packing goggles, filling a water bottle, closing the bag, and placing it by the door. Adapt the sequence for motor, vision, communication, health, and personal preference.

The prompt plan works step by step

One step may be independent while another requires a model or adapted tool. Record prompt levels separately rather than score the entire chain “prompted.” This reveals where instruction, materials, or environment need attention.

The plan defines wait time, prompt form, fading, error correction, completion, and safety stops. Physical guidance carries consent, assent, health, trauma, and competence requirements. It is never an automatic feature of total-task teaching.

Total-task practice can increase opportunities

The learner encounters every component each time, which can provide frequent practice and preserve the routine’s sequence. It may work well when several steps are already in the repertoire and assistance for the remaining steps is manageable.

The same feature can create a long or tiring session. A 20-step routine with many strong prompts may overwhelm the person or crowd out daily life. Task redesign, assistive technology, forward chaining, backward chaining, or a shorter priority sequence may fit better.

Chaining formats distribute practice differently

Forward chaining teaches the first unmastered step and supports later steps. Backward chaining teaches the last unmastered step and supports earlier steps. Whole-chain instruction offers practice across the entire sequence.

None of those labels specifies prompt type, reinforcement, error correction, dose, mastery, or completion assistance. Those remain separate clinical decisions.

Research offers task-specific illustrations

A report on feminine-hygiene instruction used total-task and forward-chaining procedures with two young women with autism and intellectual disability. The authors shifted procedure for one participant after additional steps entered the repertoire. Two cases and a sensitive, specific routine cannot supply a broad selection rule.

Bancroft and colleagues compared ways of completing untrained steps in forward chains with seven autistic children. Learning occurred across procedures while efficiency varied. Although the study is about forward chaining, it shows how completion method, time, and learner response deserve measurement in any chain.

Clinical authority and safeguards remain active

The BACB BCBA Test Content Outline, 6th edition includes chaining, prompting, fading, observable goals, contextual fit, integrity, and effectiveness review. It is examination content, not a teaching protocol.

For covered behavior analysts, the current BACB Ethics Code addresses competence, client involvement, consent and assent when applicable, assessment, risk, data, and continual evaluation. Preserve AAC, communication, breaks, mobility, essential care, and an accessible way to pause or withdraw.

A fictional total-task record

Leila chooses an eight-step routine for preparing a camera bag. Across one complete opportunity, Leila performs five steps independently, two with a visual cue, and one with a model. The bag is completed, and Leila reports that the visual checklist is useful.

Independent step coverage is 5 of 8. Complete-chain occurrence is 1 of 1, yet that chain included prompts. The two measures answer different questions. One opportunity cannot establish mastery, causation, maintenance, or transfer to a rushed morning.

Measure steps, chains, and fit

Track independent steps divided by eligible steps, prompt level by step, complete chains divided by eligible opportunities, duration, errors, safety stops, integrity, and transfer probes. Record equipment failures, skipped opportunities, and assent withdrawal separately.

Ask whether the routine saves effort or adds burden, whether tools can stay in place, and whether the person wants the skill. Whole-task completion has limited value when the process is exhausting or the goal belongs to someone else.

Task analyses need revision when real use exposes missing or unnecessary steps. Observe the routine with the person, preserve useful shortcuts, and document any change before comparing later data. A new zipper, app screen, room layout, or mobility aid can alter the chain. When steps change, identify the task-analysis version and avoid combining old and new percentages as though their denominators were identical. The most useful design may reduce the number of actions through better equipment or environmental access.

Document clearly who revised the analysis and when the new version took effect.
