What is textual behavior? Textual behavior is a verbal relation in which written or visually produced verbal stimuli control a response with point-to-point correspondence and without formal similarity between stimulus and response products. Reading the printed word “exit” aloud is a common example. Accurate textual responding shows a print-to-response relation, while comprehension, original composition, and practical use need separate evidence.
Written stimuli control a corresponding response
Point-to-point correspondence means parts of the written stimulus relate in order to parts of the response. Printed “map” followed by saying or signing “map” has that sequential relation.
Formal similarity is absent because the visual written sample and spoken or signed response product use different modes. This feature distinguishes textual behavior from copying a text in the traditional taxonomy.
Textual responding covers more than vocal reading
A person may read print through speech, sign, fingerspelling, or another response system when the defined correspondence is present. Technology can convert text to speech, though the device rather than the person produces the spoken output in a fully automated read-aloud.
If a person selects a stored spoken label after seeing text, describe the actual selection and output arrangement. Device navigation, icons, word prediction, and partner support can introduce additional controlling variables.
Pronunciation and comprehension are separate
Someone can pronounce an unfamiliar word without knowing what it means. They can also understand a symbol or word while using a response form other than reading it aloud.
Assess practical comprehension with a separate task, such as following a chosen written direction, matching a warning to its meaning, or explaining the information in an accessible form. Do not infer comprehension from pronunciation accuracy alone.
Textual behavior differs from copying
Copying “map” after seeing “map” has point-to-point correspondence and formal similarity because both sample and product are written. Textual behavior changes form across the relation.
The review The Duplic and Codic groups textual relations with codics, which preserve correspondence without formal similarity. It groups copying with duplics, where both features are present. These newer grouping labels supplement rather than erase the traditional terms.
It differs from intraverbal responding
An intraverbal response is controlled by prior verbal stimuli without point-to-point correspondence. Reading “2 + 2” as “four” may involve learned mathematical and intraverbal relations rather than textual correspondence to each printed component.
Real reading often combines textual, intraverbal, autoclitic, audience, and contextual control. The article The Multiple Control of Verbal Behavior cautions that elementary labels may describe only part of a response’s control.
A fictional kitchen example
Ana wants to read allergen labels on shared pantry bins. The team selects ten labels she encounters at home and work, using her preferred large print and text-to-speech as an optional check after her response.
Across ten first presentations, Ana produces the defined word through speech or sign for 6 of 10. After teaching with varied fonts and packages, she responds accurately to 11 of 12 new presentations. She then identifies the bin matching her dietary plan in 5 of 6 practical trials.
The 11 of 12 measures textual accuracy. The 5 of 6 measures a separate practical selection. Neither alone establishes comprehensive reading skill or medical safety.
Assessment should vary irrelevant features
Change font, size, color, position, and surrounding design while preserving accessibility. Use novel examples to test whether the response follows letter patterns rather than memorized cards or locations.
Control for pictures and package shape when the question concerns text. If those cues help the person navigate safely, preserve them in everyday life even while measuring textual control separately.
Choose a measurement unit
Possible units include whole word, grapheme, syllable, line, or functional direction. State the pronunciation or response criterion, acceptable dialect and language variations, self-correction rule, response window, and available supports.
Report correct independent responses divided by eligible samples, prompts, self-corrections, latency, accessibility failures, and practical-use outcomes. Accuracy percentages need raw counts because six of six and sixty of sixty carry different sampling information.
Teaching needs a useful purpose
Textual behavior can support reading schedules, transit signs, recipes, names, captions, labels, and chosen recreation. A narrow oral-reading goal may add little value when the person already accesses text efficiently through another method.
Protect language and dialect. Avoid penalizing accents or requiring performance for its own sake. Collaborate with educators, speech-language professionals, occupational therapists, vision specialists, or others when their scope is relevant.
The BACB outline supplies only broad scope
The BACB Test Content Outline covers verbal operants, stimulus control, measurement, and intervention selection. It is examination content rather than a literacy curriculum.
A qualified team should identify the practical goal, assess current control and access, select evidence-based teaching within scope, and review generalization with the person.
