What is supervised fieldwork for BCBA or BCaBA certification? Supervised fieldwork is applied behavior-analysis experience completed by a trainee under a qualified BCBA supervisor and documented toward BACB certification eligibility. It combines eligible client-related activities, regular supervision, observation, feedback, and formal records. Required totals and monthly structures differ by credential, fieldwork type, and application date, so the trainee and supervisor must use the handbook and forms governing the planned application.

Fieldwork develops professional competence
The BACB BCBA page identifies supervised fieldwork as part of certification eligibility and links the current handbook, forms, transition materials, and fieldwork resources. Fieldwork gives a trainee structured practice applying coursework to client-related behavior-analytic activities with qualified supervision.
Eligible experience includes supervised and independent hours that meet the handbook's activity rules. Direct implementation may count as restricted work. Unrestricted activities more closely resemble the professional work expected after certification, such as analyzing data, developing programs for clients, training caregivers or staff, and participating in behavior-analytic service discussions.
A job hour is not automatically a fieldwork hour. Before accrual begins, the trainee needs a qualified supervisor, the required signed supervision contract, and the qualifying coursework start specified by the applicable handbook. The supervisor determines whether an activity meets BACB fieldwork rules; the employer and responsible clinician separately decide whether the person is authorized and competent to perform it in care.
The current 2026 pathways use monthly gates
The June 2026 BCBA Handbook and BCaBA Handbook include the requirements for applications submitted through December 31, 2026.
| Current requirement | BCBA | BCaBA |
|---|---|---|
| Supervised Fieldwork total | 2,000 hours | 1,300 hours |
| Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork total | 1,500 hours | 1,000 hours |
| Hours per calendar month | 20 to 130 | 20 to 130 |
| Supervision percentage | 5% supervised; 10% concentrated | 5% supervised; 10% concentrated |
| Supervisor contacts | 4 supervised; 6 concentrated | 4 supervised; 6 concentrated |
| Client observation | At least 1 each month | At least 1 each month |
| Individual supervision | At least 50% of supervised hours | At least 50% of supervised hours |
| Unrestricted activities | At least 60% overall | At least 40% overall |
All requirements for the selected type must be met within each monthly supervision structure. A trainee using more than one organization or distinct structure may need separate qualifying records. When types are combined across months, the handbook's conversion and documentation rules apply; the actual hours belong in the official records rather than a privately inflated total.
January 2027 changes the fieldwork structure
BACB transition guidance says all fieldwork must meet the requirements in effect when the certification application is submitted. A trainee who may apply on either side of January 1, 2027 should plan with the supervisor to meet both sets and keep the required documentation for each.
The BCBA transition guide keeps the BCBA totals at 2,000 supervised or 1,500 concentrated hours. It changes the monthly maximum to 160 hours, concentrated supervision to 7.5%, and the client-observation requirement to 60 minutes for supervised or 90 minutes for concentrated fieldwork.
The BCaBA transition guide keeps supervised fieldwork at 1,300 hours and changes concentrated fieldwork from 1,000 to 800 hours. Its monthly maximum becomes 160 hours, while supervision remains 5% or 10% and client observation becomes 60 or 90 minutes. Both 2027 pathways use the forms and full conditions specified for 2027 applications.
Finishing a monthly percentage under one version does not rescue a missing observation, ineligible activity, late form, unqualified supervisor, or incompatible application pathway. Track every gate by the rule version that will govern submission.
The supervisor and trainee share documentation work
The BACB supervision page identifies a qualified BCBA as the responsible fieldwork supervisor and requires applicable eight-hour supervision training. The handbooks add conditions for certification tenure, disciplinary status, consulting supervision for a newer BCBA, contracts, multiple-supervisor structures, and records.
The trainee should maintain a contemporaneous log showing date, activity, client-related purpose, restricted or unrestricted category, supervisor, setting, hours, supervision format, observation, and the rule version used. Supervisor and trainee review the monthly totals before signing the applicable verification form. Final verification should reconcile to the monthly records rather than reconstructing years of work from payroll or calendars.
Under Section 4 of the BACB Ethics Code, covered supervisors address competence, capacity, delegation, documentation, feedback, and performance monitoring. A fieldwork relationship should define access to records, correction steps, dispute and discontinuation routes, and what happens if supervisor status changes.
RBT supervision and fieldwork are separate
An RBT can accrue BCBA or BCaBA fieldwork while working, but the BACB RBT fieldwork FAQ says RBT ongoing supervision and certification fieldwork have different requirements. The RBT must satisfy monthly RBT maintenance, and the trainee must independently satisfy the selected fieldwork pathway.
One contact or activity may appear in both records only when it qualifies under each governing rule and is documented accurately for each purpose. Payroll time, RBT service delivery, professional development, and fieldwork should remain distinguishable so one label does not conceal a missing certification gate.
Client care remains the first boundary
Fieldwork eligibility does not authorize a trainee to diagnose, change a treatment plan, perform beyond competence, or bypass consent, assent, privacy, payer, licensure, employment, or safety requirements. The qualified clinical role retains case decisions. The trainee receives appropriate delegation, supervision, feedback, and an accessible escalation route.
Clients and families should know the trainee's role, responsible clinician, and concern pathway. A learning objective cannot justify withholding communication, food, water, bathroom use, mobility, prescribed care, or emergency help. Immediate health, safety, protective-service, and mandated-reporting duties follow applicable policy and law.
A fictional fieldwork month
Jordan is a fictional BCBA trainee planning to apply in 2027. In April, Jordan accrues 100 hours under Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork. The 2027 BCBA supervision minimum is 100 × 7.5% = 7.5 hours. Jordan receives eight qualifying supervision hours, or 8 ÷ 100 = 8%.
Five of those eight hours are individual, so the individual share is 5 ÷ 8 = 62.5%. The record includes 95 cumulative minutes of client observation and 64 unrestricted hours. Those figures meet the listed 2027 monthly percentage, individual-share, observation-duration, and 20-to-160-hour gates. The 64% unrestricted share is a tracking measure; the handbook evaluates the 60% requirement across overall BCBA fieldwork.
Jordan and the supervisor still verify activity eligibility, supervisor status, contract, contemporaneous log, forms, application pathway, and every other handbook condition. Passing this arithmetic alone does not make the month eligible.
Questions trainees and employers can ask
Ask which credential, fieldwork type, application date, and handbook version govern the plan. Confirm when accrual may begin, who qualifies as supervisor, which activities count, how client observation occurs, and how restricted, unrestricted, individual, and group hours are recorded.
Also ask how the organization locks monthly records, corrects errors, handles missed gates, retains signed forms, protects client information, and continues supervision after a staffing or credential change. Review progress early enough to adjust future work without rewriting the past.
