What is selectionism in behavior analysis? Selectionism is the assumption that variation is differentially retained through its consequences. Behavior analysts use selection by consequences to discuss the evolution of species, the development of an individual's behavior during a lifetime, and the transmission of cultural practices. The three levels involve different units and time scales, and a selectionist explanation requires evidence rather than a story about purpose.

Selection requires variation, consequences, and retention

A selectionist account asks three linked questions:

  1. What variants existed?
  2. Which consequences were related to differential survival, recurrence, or transmission?
  3. What changed in the later population of traits, responses, or practices?

Selection is retrospective. A variant occurs before its selecting consequence. The consequence changes the representation or future probability of variants; it does not reach backward and create the earlier event because a future goal needed it.

This view differs from an explanation that assumes behavior unfolds toward a built-in purpose. Saying “the behavior happened in order to be reinforced” reverses the sequence. A stronger account identifies the prior variation, observed consequence, later change, and alternative explanations.

The BACB BCBA Test Content Outline, 6th edition lists selectionism among philosophical assumptions underlying behavior analysis. It is examination content rather than proof of a particular causal claim or a guide for cultural policy.

Phylogenetic selection occurs across generations

At the phylogenetic level, natural selection acts on heritable variation across generations. Characteristics that affect reproduction and survival can become more or less represented in a population. Species-typical anatomy, physiology, and some behavioral susceptibilities may reflect that history.

An individual's current action does not supply direct access to the exact evolutionary path that produced a characteristic. A plausible evolutionary account still needs evidence from relevant sciences. Clinicians should avoid inventing adaptive stories from one person's behavior or treating a species-level history as the full explanation of an individual event.

Ontogenetic selection occurs within a lifetime

At the ontogenetic level, consequences can change the future probability or form of behavior during an individual's life. Operant reinforcement is the clearest example: a response followed by a consequence becomes more likely under relevant conditions because of that relation.

The selected unit is a response class, not one frozen movement. Variants may arise through ordinary variability, prompting, modeling, recombination, or shaping. Consequences affect which forms recur. Antecedent context, motivating operations, learning history, physiology, and available alternatives also influence the behavior observed now.

Reinforcement describes a functional effect, not moral approval. A consequence can strengthen behavior while being unsafe, coercive, unhealthy, or inconsistent with the person's goals. Ethical acceptability requires a separate analysis of benefit, burden, choice, power, access, and alternatives.

Cultural selection concerns transmitted practices

At the cultural level, practices can be learned, coordinated, transmitted, and retained across people or generations. Language, training systems, shared routines, rules, and institutional procedures may persist because of their effects on group functioning, transmission, or survival.

Skinner's 1981 paper, Selection by Consequences, proposed phylogenetic, ontogenetic, and cultural levels. Later scholarship continues to refine the third level. A review of cultural survival in Skinner's work distinguishes immediate operant consequences for participants from longer-range effects on the continuation of a practice. A more recent three-level discussion describes cultural transmission through processes such as imitation, observation, and verbal behavior.

Do not collapse cultural selection into “everyone was rewarded.” The unit, transmission path, group consequence, time scale, and competing practices need definition. Power matters too: a practice may persist because it benefits decision-makers while burdening clients, families, or staff.

The levels interact without becoming interchangeable

A person's biology, learning history, and cultural environment operate together in daily life. Their interaction does not erase the distinctions. Genes do not become reinforcers, and an immediate reinforcer is not automatically evidence that a culture will survive.

Match the claim to the level and evidence. Physiological or evolutionary questions may require biology or medicine. Individual learning questions may require repeated behavioral measurement and experimental comparison. Cultural claims may require data on transmission, coordination, persistence, and effects across people and time.

A fictional practice example

Maya is a fictional adult who uses AAC at a community art studio. She chooses a goal of getting help with equipment setup. Across eight eligible opportunities, Maya uses her help message in 2 of 8, and partners respond within ten seconds in 1 of those 2 messages.

The studio trains partners to pause, keep Maya's AAC available, and either provide help or give a clear answer. Across ten later eligible opportunities, Maya uses the message in 8 of 10, and partners respond within ten seconds in 7 of 8 messages. The before-and-after pattern is compatible with an ontogenetic selection account, yet partner training, practice, time, and other changes occurred together. It does not demonstrate reinforcement by itself.

The studio then writes the partner routine into orientation and checks implementation across six new-worker observations. Five follow all defined steps, so transmission integrity is 5 of 6. That number describes adoption at one point. Evidence of cultural selection would require clearer units and longer observation of transmission, competing practices, and consequences for the group and Maya.

Maya's experience remains central. The team records whether help was useful, whether the response arrived in time, and whether the routine respected refusal and privacy. Increased message frequency cannot substitute for her assessment of access.

Selectionist practice still has ethical limits

The current BACB Ethics Code applies to BCBA and BCaBA certificants and people who completed an application. It addresses competence, client involvement, informed consent and assent when applicable, assessment, risk, data, and evaluation.

Preserve food, water, bathroom use, AAC, mobility, prescribed care, pain care, rest, relationships, and emergency help regardless of performance. Offer meaningful alternatives and monitor unwanted effects. A selectionist vocabulary should expand inquiry into history and context, not shift blame onto the person or justify engineering every part of daily life.
