What is relational frame theory? Relational frame theory, or RFT, is a behavior-analytic account that treats arbitrarily applicable relational responding as a learned generalized operant. Contextual cues can guide people to relate events by sameness, opposition, comparison, hierarchy, time, space, perspective, or other patterns. RFT analyzes mutual and combinatorial entailment and transformation of stimulus functions, while its explanatory claims, terminology, evidence, clinical extensions, and alternatives remain subjects of scientific debate.
RFT is a behavior-analytic theory
The Association for Behavior Analysis International describes behavior analysis as a science concerned with behavior and environmental variables. RFT works within that broad tradition and focuses on complex relational or verbal behavior.
Its central proposal is explanatory. Derived relations are learned through histories of multiple exemplars and come under contextual control as generalized patterns of responding.
“Arbitrarily applicable” refers to contextual control
Physical properties can support relations such as one stick being longer than another. Humans also apply relations to events that share no relevant physical basis because a context specifies how they relate.
Coins, marks, spoken words, or abstract symbols can be treated as “more than,” “before,” or “belongs to” according to social and learning histories. Arbitrary does not mean random.
Mutual entailment reverses a relation appropriately
If A is related to B in one direction, another relation between B and A may be derived. The reverse depends on the relation. When A is larger than B, B is smaller than A. When A is the same as B, B is the same as A.
RFT uses mutual entailment as a general term spanning relational patterns whose reversals differ.
Combinatorial entailment connects networks
Two or more trained relations can support new combined relations. Given A larger than B and B larger than C, a person may derive that A is larger than C and C is smaller than A.
The tested relations, contextual cues, and training history must be documented. Familiar knowledge can make a nominally novel probe previously learned.
Functions can transform through relations
An event's behavioral functions may change based on its place in a relational network. A neutral symbol related to a valued activity may become approached; a comparison cue can change how another event is evaluated.
“Transformation” allows the function change to vary with the relation rather than copy exactly. Evidence requires behavior under defined conditions, not an assumption that words automatically transfer every function.
Stimulus equivalence and RFT overlap without merging
Stimulus-equivalence research describes emergent reflexivity, symmetry, transitivity, and related performances. RFT offers a broader account intended to cover equivalence plus opposition, comparison, hierarchy, deixis, and other relations.

A fictional relational task
Cam learns that symbol A is “smaller than” B and B is “smaller than” C. During unreinforced probes, Cam selects A as smaller than C in 4 of 4 and C as larger than A in 3 of 4.
The pattern is consistent with combinatorially entailed comparison relations in that task. It does not establish an entire relational repertoire or prove RFT as the only explanation. Report what was trained, probed, and reinforced.
Evidence spans basic and applied studies
Reviews discuss derived relations in laboratory and applied behavior-analytic research. One applied review found varied procedures and outcomes in work with children.
The broader derived-relations literature connects these phenomena with human language and cognition. Variation in participants, tasks, definitions, and theories limits broad clinical claims.
Clinical applications require their own evidence
RFT has influenced assessment, education, psychotherapy, and language teaching. A theory-level rationale does not establish that a named protocol benefits a particular person.
Evaluate the intervention's direct evidence, practitioner competence, legal and professional scope, client priorities, accessibility, burden, adverse effects, and ongoing outcomes. Avoid using complex terminology where plain language serves the person better.
Questions for reading an RFT claim
- Which relation and contextual cue are defined?
- What was directly trained and what emerged?
- Were stimulus functions measured or assumed?
- Which RFT process is proposed?
- What competing account was considered?
- Does the study support theory, procedure, or clinical outcome?
- Are effects replicated with novel stimuli and practical tasks?
Clear relation-level data are more useful than theory labels alone.
Separate four levels of a claim
When reading or writing about RFT, label whether the statement concerns an observed response, a demonstrated relational process, an RFT explanation, or a clinical application. Evidence at one level does not automatically establish the next. A successful mutual-entailment task can document performance without validating every theoretical proposition. A theory-consistent intervention still needs direct outcome and safety evidence for its population and use.
