What does Reinforcer mean in ABA? A reinforcer is a consequence or stimulus change whose response-contingent presentation, removal, reduction, postponement, or prevention increases a defined response in relevant future conditions. The term describes a demonstrated functional effect, not an object’s trait or an adult’s intention. Praise, food, attention, information, or a break is only a candidate reinforcer until evidence shows that effect.
A reinforcer is defined by its effect
A consequence can function differently across responses, people, and contexts. A compliment may increase, have no effect on, or decrease participation; music can be wanted in one routine and unwanted in another.
To call an event a reinforcer, a report should identify:
- the exact response or response class
- the consequence or stimulus change that follows it
- whether the consequence depends on the response
- the people, setting, and relevant conditions
- later data from an appropriate comparison showing that the response increased, or persisted relative to a condition without that consequence
“Bubbles are his reinforcer” treats the label as a permanent trait. “Thirty seconds of bubble play followed an independent turn request, and independent requests rose from 2 of 10 to 7 of 10 comparable opportunities” identifies the response, consequence, denominator, change, and scope. This before-and-after pattern is consistent with reinforcement; without an adequate comparison, it does not show that bubbles alone caused the increase.
Reinforcer and reinforcement name different things
Reinforcement is the response-consequence relation; a reinforcer is the consequential change producing the strengthening effect.
Positive and negative refer to how the environment changes:
- A positive reinforcer is added after a response, and the response increases.
- In negative reinforcement, the response increases after it removes, reduces, postpones, or prevents a condition.
Because one event can add access while removing a barrier, report the before-and-after conditions and future response data. The label alone does not establish consent, humanity, or clinical appropriateness.
A reward is an everyday label for something intended or viewed as desirable. A reward is not automatically a reinforcer: if the defined response does not increase under the measured conditions, a reinforcing effect has not been demonstrated. Conversely, a functional label does not establish enjoyment, free choice, consent, or ethical acceptability.
Preferred does not automatically mean reinforcing
Preference concerns selection among available options; reinforcer status concerns a contingent outcome's effect on future behavior. Free access may be wanted while task-contingent access is rejected.
Lill, Shriver, and Allen synthesize research and propose the Stimulus Preference Assessment Decision-Making System (SPADS) for choosing context-appropriate assessment formats. They describe preferred stimuli as potential reinforcers and note that SPADS’s social validity and efficacy had not yet been evaluated. It is not individual validation.
In 1998, Roane, Vollmer, Ringdahl, and Marcus evaluated a five-minute free-operant preference assessment with people with developmental disabilities; stimuli remained freely available and were never withdrawn during the assessment. Experiment 1 included 10 participants and reinforcer assessments for a simple response. Results in those conditions show why preferred stimuli should be validated rather than assumed to be reinforcers; they do not establish that the format or any selected stimulus works for everyone.
Offer accessible ways to indicate preference through speech, AAC, sign, gesture, objects, or supported observation as applicable. Direct report and behavior can both inform assessment. No preference-assessment result overrides refusal or constitutes blanket consent to restrict access or make a selected option contingent.
Reinforcers can take many forms
A reinforcer may involve social interaction or information; access to an activity, object, place, or sensory experience; progress in a routine; relief from an unwanted condition; or a learned exchange system such as tokens.
Conditioned reinforcers gain effectiveness through learning. Tokens may gain value through exchange; a generalized conditioned reinforcer connects with several other reinforcers. Money is a familiar example, although context still matters.
Automatic reinforcement occurs without another person mediating the consequence. It requires evidence; a repetitive movement cannot be labeled “sensory” or automatically reinforced from appearance.
A fictional example with complete denominators
Tariq is a fictional twelve-year-old who wants a quicker way to ask for shared drawing materials. He chooses a written card and a speech-generating-device message as equivalent forms. Tariq keeps unrestricted access to his device, the classmate chooses whether to participate, and an adult remains responsible for ensuring that everyone has required materials and an equivalent activity option.
Baseline includes eight predeclared eligible opportunities: Tariq chose the shared drawing activity, a requested material was available, both communication forms were accessible, and the classmate was ready to respond. Tariq independently requests in 2 of 8. The classmate offers a requested material within eight seconds after 1 of those 2 requests, so baseline partner implementation is 1 of 2 rather than an assumed consistent consequence.
In a later teaching phase, the adult schedules ten offers. Tariq declines one before the activity begins; under the predeclared rule, it is not eligible, leaving nine eligible opportunities. Tariq requests independently in 8 of 9 and uses a prompt in 1 of 9. The classmate offers a requested material after all eight independent requests, for partner implementation of 8 of 8. Report 8 of 9, or 89% when rounded, versus 2 of 8, or 25%, at baseline.
The increase is consistent with, but does not by itself prove, a reinforcement effect. Teaching, partner reliability, and other phase changes are competing explanations; a causal claim requires an appropriate experimental comparison. Record access, partner implementation, prompts, and declines separately. Never withhold AAC, required materials, ordinary drawing access, or another person’s participation to create a trial.
Reinforcer value changes
Recent access, alternatives, effort, timing, health, sensory state, and context can change a consequence's effectiveness. A game may be valued after a gap but not after extended play.
Thus, “highly motivated by food” is weak documentation. Reassess current choices and actual outcomes by condition rather than turning them into a permanent preference profile.
Ethical use protects free access and basic needs
The Association for Behavior Analysis International basic-principles curriculum lists reinforcement and motivating operations as foundational. The BACB BCBA Test Content Outline (6th ed.) covers conditioned and generalized reinforcers, preference assessment, reinforcer identification, and procedure design. These are training topics, not individual approval.
The current BACB Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts applies to BCBA and BCaBA certificants and applicants. It requires appropriate client and stakeholder involvement; required informed consent and assent when applicable; assessment and intervention choices based on evidence, context, resources, and preferences; risk minimization; correct data use; and continual evaluation.
Basic nutrition and hydration, bathroom access, rest, AAC, mobility and sensory supports, prescribed healthcare, pain and help communication, safety, and respectful relationships must never be made contingent on performance. Do not manufacture deprivation or withhold a needed communication or regulation option to increase reinforcer value. Preserve meaningful free access to preferred activities. Any narrow teaching arrangement must be individualized, agreed, monitored for assent, dissent, and adverse effects, and offer genuine alternatives. The person may refuse, choose another option, pause, or stop.
Questions to ask about a claimed reinforcer
- Which response did the consequence strengthen or maintain?
- What baseline and later data support that conclusion?
- Was the consequence contingent on the response?
- Does the person currently choose and accept the outcome?
- Could timing, another intervention, or a context change explain the result?
- How often will preference, effectiveness, side effects, and assent be reassessed?
