What is multiple control in verbal behavior? Multiple control means verbal behavior reflects more than a simple one-cue, one-response relation. Several variables can jointly influence one response, called convergent control, and one variable can affect several responses, called divergent control. Context, motivating operations, verbal and nonverbal stimuli, audience, learning history, and consequences often work together, so analysts should preserve uncertainty and test practical hypotheses.
Several variables can affect one response
A person says “dog” after hearing a bark, seeing a dog, being asked what is nearby, and wanting to pet it. These variables may combine. Calling the response only a tact or intraverbal can hide useful context.
Convergent multiple control describes several variables strengthening one response. Their effects can be additive, conditional, or difficult to separate in natural communication.
One variable can affect several responses
Seeing a dog may occasion “dog,” “brown,” “can I pet?”, a story about another dog, an AAC selection, or silence. Divergent multiple control describes one variable affecting several possible responses.
The response that occurs also depends on audience, recent conversation, language, motivation, access, and learning history. Variability can be functional rather than an error.
Verbal-operant labels can overlap
A response may have mand, tact, echoic, and intraverbal influences at the same time. The categories help analyze relations, while daily conversation rarely arrives in isolated textbook form.

Assessment should sample context
Record the verbal and nonverbal events present, relevant motivating conditions, partner, setting, prior exchange, response form, and consequence. Compare naturally varying conditions when safe. Ask the person directly about meaning and intent when possible.
Avoid inferring private events as fact. Use terms such as “consistent with,” “possible influence,” or “hypothesis” when evidence cannot isolate the relation.
Map variables before naming control
For a defined exchange, create columns for verbal stimuli, nonverbal stimuli, recent events, motivating conditions, audience, response form, prompts, and consequences. Mark which facts were directly observed, reported by the person, reported by someone else, or inferred. This prevents a confident diagram from hiding weak evidence.
Compare several occurrences and nonoccurrences. A variable present every time may still have little influence if it is also present when the response does not occur. Look for combinations that change together, then design the least disruptive observation or teaching test that can answer the practical question. Keep communication access and partner behavior stable when possible. When several explanations remain plausible, retain them rather than choosing a single tidy label. The value of the map is better support, prediction, and teaching design.
Have a second qualified reviewer code a sample without seeing the first interpretation. Compare the variables recorded and the confidence assigned to each. Disagreement may reveal an ambiguous definition, missing context, or an inference presented as observation. Update the map and preserve both source notes. When the analysis affects a treatment change, state which evidence supports the decision and what future observation would challenge it. Keep the map with the clinical decision.
Teaching can create unwanted narrow control
Repeated flashcards, fixed wording, one instructor, or one material set may produce accurate performance tied to those features. Natural use can drop when any feature changes. Plan varied examples, people, settings, and meaningful outcomes.
Variation should remain manageable and accessible. Change one important feature at a time when the team needs to understand why performance changed.
A fictional dog-club example
Lian participates in a dog-walking club. Across ten eligible exchanges, the team records questions, visible dogs, barks, recent comments, requested outcomes, audience, and Lian's chosen communication. Eight responses appear related to two or more recorded variables.
The 8 of 10 is a coding result, not proof of causal control. Reviewers preserve uncertainty and compare agreement on the recorded variables. Partners respond to Lian's message in 7 of 8 recognizable exchanges, reported separately.
Communication remains multimodal
ASHA's AAC portal describes multimodal communication and says AAC users should always have access to their tools or devices. Multiple control applies to communication beyond speech.
Accept AAC, sign, gesture, writing, movement, vocalization, and combined forms. Partner behavior can change which response becomes efficient and safe.
Use the analysis to improve fit
Track whether teaching produces functional use, flexible responding, repair, generalization, maintenance, and a positive experience. The goal is better support and prediction, rather than a perfect label for every utterance.
The current BACB Ethics Code addresses competence, client involvement, collaboration, consent and assent when applicable, assessment, risk, and evaluation for covered professionals. Coordinate language questions with a qualified SLP.
A useful analysis ends with a testable support decision. Vary one meaningful cue, improve partner response, broaden examples, add communication access, or collect missing context, then observe again. Preserve uncertainty when several explanations remain. The label should organize inquiry without pretending that a brief sample proves control.
