What is immediacy of effect in single-case visual analysis? Immediacy of effect is how soon the data pattern changes after an independent variable changes. Analysts compare the final observations of one condition with the first observations of the next, examining level, trend, and variability. A rapid predicted shift can strengthen evidence; delayed or absent change needs interpretation alongside overlap, consistency, replication, measurement, procedural integrity, and the outcome's expected time course.
Immediacy focuses on the condition boundary
The condition-change line marks when the independent variable is supposed to change. Immediacy asks whether the dependent-variable pattern changes near that boundary in the predicted direction. The analyst examines vertical position, direction, and scatter rather than checking only the first new point.

Before comparing, verify that the graph line matches actual implementation. A label entered on Monday cannot support an immediate-effect claim when staff began the procedure on Thursday. Record the date, time or session, responsible person, dose, materials, and procedural-integrity evidence.
The common comparison uses three points on each side
The What Works Clearinghouse single-case technical documentation compares level, trend, and variability in the last three data points of one phase with the first three of the next. A larger and faster predicted contrast supplies stronger immediacy evidence within that framework.
Write the calculation or visual rule. For level, a reviewer might compare the two three-point means or medians. Trend requires attention to direction across those observations. Variability asks whether scatter changes at the boundary. The graph remains necessary because identical averages can come from different sequences.
Three points are a convention rather than a law of nature. A phase with fewer points cannot support that exact window. High-frequency measurement, irregular calendar spacing, delayed data entry, or a slowly developing outcome may call for a different prespecified method.
Expected latency shapes interpretation
Some environmental arrangements may affect behavior in the next opportunity. Skill acquisition, tissue healing, medication titration, sleep scheduling, or changes requiring repeated practice may have a plausible delay. An immediate shift can be desirable evidence for one question and an unrealistic expectation for another.
State the expected latency before viewing the outcome when possible. Identify its scientific or clinical basis. Keep session count and calendar time separate: three daily observations span two days between the first and last, while three weekly observations span two weeks.
Carryover matters too. In a reversal or alternating design, effects from a prior condition may continue into the next. Treatment interactions, insufficient washout, fatigue, learning history, or irreversible change can blur the boundary. The design and phase timing should fit the process.
A sharp shift and delayed trend differ
Suppose a fictional outcome is expected to increase. The final three baseline observations are 4, 5, and 4, with a mean of 4.33.
In condition B, the first three observations are 8, 9, and 8, with a mean of 8.33. The boundary-window level difference is +4.00. All three B observations exceed every point in the baseline window, and the shift begins at the first B observation. This pattern shows strong immediacy for the stated six-point comparison.
In a separate hypothetical condition C, the first three observations are 4, 5, and 6, with a mean of 5.00. The level difference from the same baseline window is +0.67. Later C observations are 8, 9, and 10, showing a rising trend and eventual separation with limited immediate change.
The examples describe patterns, not interventions to compare. B and C could differ in mechanism, implementation, context, measurement, or expected latency. A reviewer should preserve the full data path and resist using the larger boundary difference as a universal ranking of clinical value.
Immediacy joins five other dimensions
The authors of Systematic Protocols for Visual Analysis organize review around level, trend, variability, immediacy, overlap, and consistency. Immediacy becomes more persuasive when predicted shifts recur at multiple design-controlled boundaries and similar conditions show consistent patterns.
A single-case design analysis review likewise separates within-phase review from between-phase immediacy, overlap, and consistency. A rapid change at one AB boundary remains vulnerable to history, measurement drift, and coincident events because the design has no replication.
Manolov's paper on linear trend in single-case analysis discusses multiple ways to operationalize trend and quantitative comparisons between phases, including immediate-effect summaries. State the method rather than treating software output as self-explanatory.
Common immediacy errors
Common errors include using one point, comparing whole-phase means, ignoring baseline trend, moving the phase line to fit the data, confusing entry date with implementation date, and calling delayed acquisition a failure without a justified latency expectation.
Also check floor or ceiling effects, unequal measurement schedules, missing boundary data, prompt changes, and procedural-integrity drops. A striking first point may be an outlier. A small initial shift can lead to a meaningful stable change. Each pattern needs the rest of the design.
A practical review checklist
- Define the predicted direction and expected latency.
- Verify the actual condition-change time and integrity.
- Select and name the boundary window before interpretation.
- Compare level, trend, and variability across that window.
- Show raw values, elapsed time, and any calculation.
- Inspect overlap, later stability, similar phases, and replication.
- Record uncertainty, client relevance, risk, and the resulting decision.
When reviewers disagree, identify whether the dispute concerns window choice, trend, outliers, implementation timing, expected latency, or the weight given to immediacy. Preserve the disagreement and resolve it through the qualified review process.
