What is a data path on an ABA graph? A data path is the line that connects successive plotted values from the same measured series when those observations are meaningfully comparable. It helps readers see level, trend, variability, and changes over time. Connections should follow a declared rule. Missing observations, condition changes, different measures, and calendar gaps may require a visible break rather than an invented bridge.

The line joins one defined series

A plotted point represents a value at a stated time, session, opportunity set, or other observation unit. The data path joins adjacent eligible points from that same series. The line guides the eye through the measured sequence; it does not create an observation between the points.

When a graph shows correct and incorrect responses, each series needs its own symbols, labels, and path. Connecting a correct-response point to the next incorrect-response point would merge different measures into a meaningless zigzag.

Connect points when the sequence is comparable

Before drawing a segment, check that the two points share:

  • the same operational definition and unit
  • the same series identity
  • a declared observation sequence
  • compatible denominator and duration rules
  • a graphing convention that allows the connection

Comparable does not mean identical conditions. A line graph may connect observations within a condition and stop at a phase-change line. Some designs continue the series across phase boundaries, while others break it. State the convention and apply it consistently.

Leave a gap when the record has a gap

A blank day is not automatically a zero. Zero means the observation occurred and no defined responses were counted. Missing means the observation or usable record is absent. Ineligible means the event could not enter the measure under its rule.

Connecting points across missing time can make the line appear to describe an unobserved transition. A gap, open symbol, or annotation protects that distinction. If the horizontal axis shows actual dates, the distance should preserve elapsed time unless a clearly disclosed session-number axis is used.

Phase changes need explicit treatment

A phase-change line marks when a planned condition changes. Place it between the last observation under the prior condition and the first under the new condition. Avoid running the phase line through a point.

If the procedure changed during an observation, apply the predeclared assignment or split rule. A label entered later in software should never move the boundary away from the actual implementation record.

Some teams use a solid path within conditions and no connecting segment across the boundary. Others connect the data series while the phase line identifies the change. Both can be readable when the legend explains the choice.

A fictional AAC-availability example

Keiko’s team graphs the percentage of eligible requests made with speech, sign, or AAC during a home routine. Values are 30%, 40%, and 50% on Monday through Wednesday. Thursday has no observation because the routine did not occur. Friday is 60%.

The graph connects Monday through Wednesday and leaves a gap before Friday. Plotting Thursday as zero would claim an observed opportunity set with no requests. Drawing one uninterrupted segment from Wednesday to Friday could conceal the missing observation.

On the following Monday, the team begins a new partner-response procedure. A phase-change line falls between Friday and Monday, and the new condition label identifies the procedure version. The AAC system remains available throughout.

Software needs an explicit rule

Spreadsheet and clinical-system defaults may connect every nonblank cell, treat blanks as zero, sort dates as text, or join unrelated series. Verify the rendered graph against the source table after import, correction, filtering, or export.

A useful path-integrity audit is valid path segments divided by all segments due for review. A segment is valid only when its endpoints share the required series, definition, sequence, and eligibility. Keep erroneous bridges and missing required connections in the denominator until fixed.

Lines can imply more than the evidence supports

A path makes change easy to see, but it cannot establish causation. A rising line may coincide with instruction, maturation, a schedule change, new opportunities, or measurement drift. Interpretation still depends on design, fidelity, repeated effects, and contextual evidence.

Avoid smoothing the displayed path unless the graph clearly labels the transformation and retains raw points. Trend lines and moving averages answer different questions from the original data path.

Make the graph accessible

Use distinct symbols, direct labels, adequate contrast, and a text table. Color alone is insufficient for identifying series or phases. Static exports should preserve gaps and legends that were previously available only through hover text.
