How does Chaining work in ABA care? Chaining teaches a meaningful multistep activity by linking its component responses in a planned sequence. A clinician first builds and validates a task analysis, then teaches with forward chaining, backward chaining, or practice of the total task. The person’s goal, current skills, preferences, motor and communication access, setting, and data should determine the approach.
A chain connects responses that form an activity
A behavior chain has an identifiable beginning, a sequence of responses, and a completed outcome. Each completed step changes the environment and creates the occasion for the next step.
Making tea, entering a destination in a transit app, packing equipment, and completing a workplace closing routine can all be analyzed as chains. The activity should matter to the person rather than exist only as a therapy exercise.
The task analysis comes first
A task analysis lists observable steps in a workable order. Clinicians can draft it by performing the task, observing a skilled person, consulting the client and family, and checking safety or manufacturer instructions.
Then they test it in the real setting. Step size should match the learner. “Prepare the device” may be one step for one person and five steps for another. The sequence may need branches, such as what to do when an item is missing.
Three formats distribute teaching differently
- Forward chaining: Teach the first unmastered step, then add later steps in order. The learner completes an increasing portion from the beginning.
- Backward chaining: The instructor completes earlier steps as needed and teaches the last unmastered step first. Completion immediately contacts the activity’s natural outcome.
- Total-task chaining: The learner gets an opportunity to complete every step during each teaching occasion, with planned support where needed.
A published comparison of procedural variations in teaching chains describes all three formats. Another small study comparing forward and backward chaining found similar errors and training time in its cases. Those results do not establish a universal winner.
Prompts support links and then fade
The plan should specify which prompts are available for each step, when they occur, and how they fade. A visual checklist, model, gesture, spoken cue, or physical support can have different accessibility and intrusiveness.
Record the least support that produced an accurate response. Avoid counting a prompted step as independent. If errors cluster at one link, reconsider the task analysis, materials, cue, response effort, or teaching history before adding more pressure.
Reinforcement can occur within and after the chain
Completing one step often produces the cue or materials for the next. These linked changes can help maintain responding. The completed activity may also produce a natural result, such as having a packed bag ready for swimming.
Additional reinforcement may be useful during acquisition. Select it with the person, monitor whether it functions as intended, and plan transfer to ordinary outcomes. Essential access should never depend on performance.
A fictional community example
Mara wants to borrow graphic novels independently at the library. With Mara, the team defines a seven-step checkout chain using the self-service kiosk and her preferred visual checklist.
During four initial opportunities, Mara completes 12 of 28 steps independently. The team chooses total-task teaching because she already performs parts throughout the sequence. Across four later opportunities, she completes 23 of 28 independently, uses an agreed prompt on four steps, and pauses one opportunity when the kiosk freezes.
The counts show performance under two phases. They do not prove that chaining alone caused the difference because practice, checklist familiarity, book choice, and kiosk conditions also changed. The frozen-system step stays documented as an environmental failure.
Measure both accuracy and usefulness
Useful measures include independent steps divided by eligible steps, prompted steps by prompt level, errors by step, completion time, opportunities completed, generalization across settings, and maintenance after supports change.
Define exclusions before collecting data. Report opportunities the person declines, missing materials, equipment failures, and safety holds separately. Pair performance with the person’s rating of effort, comfort, and whether the completed activity is actually useful.
Chaining differs from nearby procedures
A task analysis defines the steps. Chaining is the teaching arrangement that links them. Prompting supplies temporary assistance. Prompt fading transfers control. Shaping reinforces successive changes in a response dimension rather than teaching a fixed response sequence.

- Did the person help choose the activity and desired outcome?
- Was the task analysis tested in the actual setting?
- Why was this chaining format selected?
- Which steps are independent, prompted, unavailable, or declined?
- How will prompts fade without removing needed accommodations?
- What would make the activity easier or more worthwhile?
