When task interspersal slows learning, verify the comparison first. Check acquisition opportunities, session time, task status, similarity, switching demands, reinforcement, prompts, access, health, partner delivery, and the person's experience. Constant practice or another mix may fit better. A lower acquisition percentage can reflect the arrangement, fewer trials, a harder target, or invalid measurement. Frequent changes in materials, posture, response mode, partner, or sensory conditions can consume time and attention. Similar tasks can create confusion. A single maintenance task may also become tiring or lose accuracy through repetition.
Use the strongest counterexample
In the first experiment of the object-label study, constant teaching was similar to or better than similar and dissimilar interspersal for all participants. Later exploratory results varied with consequences. The provider survey also showed that common practice is inconsistent.
Reassess fit and access
The receptive-language paper identifies unresolved questions about interspersal design. The Ethics Code addresses assessment, medical needs, risk, and evaluation. ASHA supports continuous communication access during any comparison.
A practical example
Kai receives 12 new-skill opportunities in constant sessions and 6 in equal-length interspersal sessions. Accuracy is 7/12 and 4/6. The interspersal percentage is higher, yet it produces fewer correct new responses and longer transitions. The team reports both views before deciding.

Are opportunity counts equal? What is learned per minute? Did switching add burden? Are tasks still maintained? Did consequences differ? Would constant, blocked, spaced, or naturalistic practice fit better?
