Reinforcement during task interspersal can use the same or different consequences and schedules for maintenance and acquisition trials. The choice changes total reinforcement, effort-to-outcome relations, possible satiation, and what the learner experiences. Teams should identify the exact consequence after each response type, assess current preferences, protect ordinary access, monitor acquisition and maintenance, and revise from individual data rather than copying one study arrangement.
Map reinforcement during task interspersal
For each trial type, record the response requirement, independent and prompted consequences, schedule, quality, magnitude, delay, duration, and access outside teaching. Include praise, activity continuation, correction, and breaks, not only tangible items.
Consider effort and allocation
If a low-effort maintained response produces the same outcome as a difficult new response, the person may allocate differently than the plan assumes. A stronger consequence for the new response can also feel disproportionate or distract from natural function. Measure rather than speculate.
Read exploratory findings carefully
The five-child object-label study found no clear interspersal advantage initially, then explored reinforcement quality. Performance improved under interspersal only in particular arrangements. The authors treated those analyses as exploratory, so they do not establish one consequence rule.
Preserve ethics and access
The provider survey found providers varied in reinforcers and schedules. The Ethics Code addresses preference, positive reinforcement, risk, and evaluation. ASHA supports uninterrupted AAC access; communication never serves as a contingent prize.
A practical example
Mina earns activity continuation after both maintained and new responses, with descriptive feedback for new attempts. Across ten sessions, new responses increase from 1/8 to 5/8 while maintained accuracy stays 31/32. Mina's preference and signs of satiation are reviewed weekly.
Questions families can use
What follows each response? Are prompts treated differently? Is the consequence still wanted? Does one task produce much more reinforcement? Are ordinary access and basic needs protected? Which outcome shows the arrangement helps?
