Caregiver training opportunities should be defined before scoring. An opportunity may be invalid when it was absent for reasons outside the caregiver's assigned responsibility, the client withdrew assent, or the clinician changed the plan during the trial. If preparing materials is part of the caregiver skill, missing materials count in that step. Prompts, environmental failures, simulations, coached trials, and independent routine probes need separate labels.
Define caregiver training opportunities
Write the cue, caregiver responsibility, required materials, client participation, start and end, valid-opportunity rule, prompt codes, exclusion reasons, and trial condition. Keep every exclusion with its reason. A high score from deleting difficult or failed trials is less useful than a complete opportunity record.
Interpret performance in context
The denominator should match the decision. A coached rehearsal can show learning with feedback; an independent probe can show performance without that help. Pooling them can make the result look better while hiding prompt dependence. Client assent withdrawal is a participation event, not a caregiver error.
Use current ethics and caregiver-training evidence
The Preas and Mathews study separated trained teaching procedures from generalization. Hassan and colleagues found natural-environment performance needed in-situ support after ex-situ BST in a small evaluation. The systematic review underscores the need for transparent methods and cautious inference.
Preserve client communication and family choice
The ASHA AAC portal supports continuous communication access. For this training decision, preserve the client's established communication, assent and dissent, and ordinary supports while allowing the caregiver to ask questions, disagree, pause, or request a different method.
A practical example
Six planned snack routines yield four valid opportunities. One is absent because the family is away; one stops when the client withdraws assent. The caregiver completes ten of twelve applicable steps across the four valid routines, while both exclusions remain visible.
Questions families can use
What creates an opportunity? Which parts are assigned to the caregiver? Which exclusions are allowed? Are coached and independent trials separate? How is assent withdrawal recorded?
