An errorless teaching AAC procedure can use modeling, visual cues, time delay, or another planned prompt while the person's communication system remains available. Define the target message, natural communication opportunity, ordinary navigation, response window, starting prompt, fading rule, backup method, and data categories. A partner may model language without authoring the person's response, and speech or eye contact should never be required before a recognizable message is honored.
Write errorless teaching AAC steps
Confirm that the vocabulary exists, the device is charged and positioned, and the person can reach the access method. Specify whether modeling occurs on a partner device or the client's system, what wait time follows, and how prompts are scored. Missing vocabulary or device failure is a system event.
Protect message authorship
Aided language modeling can demonstrate available words. Physical selection on the person's device can blur who produced the message. Keep the final response attributable and provide a separate route for no, stop, help, pain, different, and more time.
Use sources carefully
The prompting review covers strategy selection and fading but is not AAC-specific clinical authority. The BACB outline covers prompting as examination content. The Ethics Code addresses competence, client involvement, consent and assent when applicable, and evaluation.
Follow AAC guidance
The ASHA AAC portal supports continual device or tool access and partner support across contexts. Coordinate communication design with the person and appropriate communication professional. Never remove AAC to create motivation or test independence.
A practical example
Zuri is learning to request a quieter room. A partner models quiet on a separate board, waits, and Zuri selects the message on a personal device. The team fades the model while keeping device access and the room change responsive.
Questions families can use
Is the message available? Who models and where? Who authors the response? What wait time applies? What backup works? Which prompt fades? Is the communication honored during teaching and probes?
