Change an ABA practice schedule when the person withdraws, distress or safety concerns appear, acquisition or maintenance stays weak, fatigue or routine burden grows, delivery remains unreliable, the goal is complete, or another schedule fits better. Address immediate safety first. Record the trigger, old and new opportunity calendars, client and family input, access conditions, learning evidence, unresolved clinical questions, transition date, and planned follow-up.

Know when to change ABA practice schedule use

Predeclare immediate and review triggers. Immediate triggers can include medical concern, serious distress, inaccessible communication, or unsafe delivery. Review triggers can include missed sessions, weak acquisition, poor maintenance, excessive fatigue, family disruption, or finished goals.

Change one interpretable unit

Where safe and practical, alter the calendar, session length, or trials per session while preserving enough of the teaching procedure to interpret the result. Document unavoidable simultaneous changes and avoid a causal claim.

Use evidence as guidance

The Haq study found distributed practice more efficient for three children and selected verbal skills. The preference study found two children preferred alternating trials. Those findings support measurement of both learning and preference, not a mandatory schedule.

Protect transition and access

The Ethics Code addresses involvement, assent when applicable, risk, evaluation, discontinuation, and transition. ASHA supports continuous AAC access. The BACB outline supplies decision and integrity scope.

A practical example

Cora's four-day schedule delivers 12/24 planned trials and creates three family conflicts. A two-day schedule delivers 22/24 with similar independent accuracy and Cora selects it. The plan changes on a recorded date and checks maintenance after two weeks.

Questions families can use

Which trigger occurred? What schedule feature changes? Are opportunity totals preserved? Did the person choose? How will acquisition, maintenance, fatigue, and routine burden be checked after transition?
