Distinguish planning time from action time

A watch supports readiness; a warning means the affected area should take protective action under current official guidance. Do not use a warning interval to gather nonessential belongings, finish a task, or wait for teaching approval. The household plan should already name the safest available location.

Use several official alert routes

FEMA's alerts guide recommends Wireless Emergency Alerts, local opt-in systems, NOAA Weather Radio, and organizational alerts. Check that sleeping and awake household members receive an accessible signal.

Reach the preselected safe place

National Weather Service tornado guidance identifies storm shelters and basements as safe places and, when they are unavailable, an interior room without windows. A tornado warning requires immediate shelter. Mobile homes, vehicles, public venues, schools, and workplaces need location-specific plans.

Preserve access without delaying shelter

Keep AAC, a backup communication method, mobility equipment, shoes, medication needed immediately, and head protection in or near the safe place when the plan calls for them. Use the person's accessible stop, help, and distress signals. Route medical emergencies through the current local system.
