ABA calendar skills can support recording events, checking what comes next, noticing conflicts, preparing for changes, setting reminders, and sharing selected plans with chosen people. The calendar should fit the person's vision, motor, reading, language, memory, and communication access. Clarify who owns each event, who may edit or view it, and what backup works when the device or supporter is unavailable.
Choose the calendar around the person
Compare paper, visual, phone, tablet, smart speaker, wall display, or combined systems. Ask what the person wants to track and which views, symbols, colors, voice access, alerts, and sharing settings are usable without making the calendar burdensome.
Define event ownership
Separate events the person chooses, commitments another organization schedules, household plans, clinical appointments, and optional ideas. Record who can add, change, cancel, confirm, or share each type so a reminder never becomes authority over the person's time.
Plan for changes and conflicts
Teach an accessible way to compare events, request more information, choose between options when possible, ask a responsible person to resolve a conflict, and update the calendar. Preserve the old information when it explains a missed or changed plan.
Protect privacy and access
The Ethics Code addresses understandable communication, client involvement, confidentiality, assent when applicable, and documentation for covered analysts. ASHA supports AAC access. Choose sharing permissions and notification text with the person.
A practical example
Ezra tracks eight chosen weekly events. The calendar, device, and reminder settings are available for 7/8. Ezra checks and prepares for 6/7 ready events and independently updates two changed times. The dead battery remains a system-readiness result.
Questions families can use
What does the person want to track? Which format is accessible? Who owns each event? Who may view or edit it? How are conflicts and changes handled? What backup works when technology fails?
