How ABA May Support Cleaning and Organizing a Personal Space

Agree on the purpose and standard

Ask what the person wants to find, use, display, protect, discard, or keep private. Translate broad requests such as clean your room into observable conditions tied to the space's function. Separate personal preferences from actual health, lease, fire, or shared-household requirements.

Design storage around use

Place frequently used items where they are visible or easy to retrieve. Use labels, photos, open bins, drawers, color, inventory lists, or zones only when they help the person. Preserve a private container or area for items others should not inspect without authority.

Control products and hazards

CPSC advises safe storage of household chemicals, including original containers and locked or inaccessible storage for children. Match product, lifting, sharp-object, electrical, mold, pest, biohazard, and repair decisions to the actual home and qualified role.

Support communication and assent

The Ethics Code addresses dignity, confidentiality, client involvement, assent when applicable, and risk. ASHA supports AAC access. A supporter should ask before moving personal belongings and stop routine practice on withdrawal.

A practical example

Jonah chooses to keep a desk ready for drawing. Across six checks, labeled storage and safe tools are available in 5/6. Jonah completes the chosen reset in 4/5 and asks for help with a spill once. The missing bin remains a setup issue.

Questions families can use

Who owns the space and belongings? What condition matters to the person? Which requirements come from health or housing? Are tools and storage accessible? What stays private? Who handles hazardous or repair work?
