ABA conversation availability skills can support asking whether someone has time or capacity to talk, naming the topic or urgency when useful, choosing a channel, and responding to yes, no, later, or uncertainty. The skill belongs to both partners. A person can also state their own availability. Body language may add context, while direct, accessible questions and answers reduce guesswork.
Choose a simple availability question
Options include Is now a good time?, Can we talk about the schedule?, Do you prefer text?, or When should I check back? The person chooses wording and level of detail. The CASP public summary supports individualized planning rather than a single conversational formula.
Make answers accessible in both directions
Keep AAC available for now, later, no, urgent, private, another channel, and finished. Partners should state availability clearly and allow processing time. Silence or a delayed response can remain unresolved instead of being labeled agreement or rejection.
Separate urgency from pressure
An immediate safety need follows the applicable emergency or reporting route. Routine topics can wait, use another person, or move to another channel. The ASAN self-determination page supports effective communication and personal control. Avoid using urgency language to force attention.
Respect privacy and boundaries
Ask whether the topic needs a private setting and who may participate. A supporter can help schedule a time without requesting the content. When someone says later, record an agreed time if needed. When someone says no, accept the boundary unless a separate legal or safety duty governs.
A practical example
Theo checks availability before six conversations. Five partners have an accessible now, later, or different-channel response; one group leader gives no clear route. Partner readiness is 5 of 6. Theo talks now twice, schedules two later conversations, chooses text once, and leaves the unresolved item with the leader.
Questions families can use
Ask what topic needs discussion, how urgency is determined, which availability question fits, how both people answer accessibly, what privacy is needed, how later is scheduled, and what happens when no clear response arrives. ABA conversation availability skills should reduce guessing for everyone.
