Define ABA chaining AAC and tool use

For every step, record the natural cue, response, device or tool, access method, prompt rule, partner role, and outcome. A person opening a chosen checklist independently differs from a partner directing the person to open it. Both can be measured without removing the tool.

Assign system responsibility

Name who charges, positions, updates, cleans, transports, repairs, and tests each support. If the partner is responsible and the device is unavailable, record a system failure. Do not convert it into a learner error or quietly omit it from the denominator.

Protect authorship

Partners may model communication on a separate system or another agreed route. Avoid physically authoring a message on the person's device. Honor recognizable communication throughout the chain, including stop, pain, help, different, finished, and more time.

The ASHA AAC guidance supports continual access to tools or devices and partner support across contexts. The BACB outline covers chaining, prompts, stimulus-control transfer, integrity, and evaluation as examination content. The Ethics Code adds competence and collaboration duties for covered people.

A practical example

Omar uses a switch-controlled checklist while restocking an art cart. Omar advances each completed step. Staff replenish the device battery and provide a printed backup. Data separate self-advanced steps, staff prompts, battery failures, and help requests.

Questions families can use

Which tools are ordinary access? Who maintains them? What backup works? Who authors AAC messages? How are unavailable tools scored? Which adult prompt should fade?
