Multiple events ABC observation window data need a predeclared coding rule. Events may receive separate marginal codes, a meaningful compound code, a sequence order, or a justified priority code. Retain order and timing
Two consequences in one window may occur in different sequences. Store timestamps or ordered event IDs when order is relevant to the review question.
Design the codebook before observation
A multiple events ABC observation window needs a codebook that lists every event category, its observable boundary, whether it can overlap another category, and the window in which it is scored. Include examples of attention only, break only, both, neither, and any compound category the team plans to use. State how late events, repeated events, and events already in progress at the window boundary are handled.
Keep the raw event list separate from the analysis table. One consequence event may contribute to a marginal attention count, a marginal break count, and one mutually exclusive combination cell. This is valid only when the report labels those views clearly and can reconcile them to the same anchor cohort.
Reconcile marginal and exclusive counts
For each anchor event, create yes-or-no fields for the components and one derived combination label. Marginal percentages answer whether each component occurred. Exclusive cells answer which combination occurred. The exclusive counts should sum to all valid anchors when the table includes a neither cell.
For Uma, attention only 3, break only 1, both 3, and neither 3 reconcile to 10 response events. Attention is present in 3 + 3 = 6 events, and a break is present in 1 + 3 = 4. Keep this arithmetic in the worksheet so future software or codebook changes can be tested.
Test technical limits before release
Some forms permit only one consequence code. If the software forces priority, document the winning rule and preserve a separate note or event export with the lost components. Test the form with simultaneous, repeated, and out-of-order events. A technical constraint should never appear later as a clinical finding.
Report the raw component counts, exclusive reconciliation, denominator, window, and overlap rule. When order matters, add a sequence table instead of stretching one compound code to answer several questions.
Frame one clear coding question
The overlapping-event codebook for Uma names the observable events, sequence direction, time or interval window, planned exposure, valid denominator, missing-state rule, raw cells, calculation owner, and review date before percentages are interpreted.
Worked example: reconcile overlapping events
Uma has 10 valid response events. Attention follows 6, a break follows 4, and both follow 3. Marginal probabilities are 0.60 for attention and 0.40 for a break; they sum to 1.00 here even though three events share both codes. The mutually exclusive cells are attention only 3, break only 1, both 3, and neither 3.
Audit the anchor denominator
Uma's codebook states that marginal categories can overlap and preserves four exclusive cells for reconciliation. The totals 3 + 1 + 3 + 3 equal all 10 response events.
Interpret marginal and compound results
Separate codes answer whether each event occurred. Compound cells answer which combinations occurred. Sequence order can add another question when attention and a break begin at different times.
Protect access during observation
During Uma's multiple events inside one ABC window review, keep AAC, interpreters, mobility, food, water, bathroom use, prescribed care, health support, rest, relationships, and emergency help available. Record access or health changes and use accessible communication to ask about relevant events, comfort, assent, dissent, and priorities.
