Clinical and access boundary: A qualified team must decide whether MSWO fits the person, assessment question, candidate set, and context. Preserve AAC, communication, sensory, motor, visual, hearing, literacy, language, mobility, and other ordinary access. Honor help, break, stop, refusal, distress, pain, fatigue, and withdrawal. This worksheet does not authorize forced selection, deprivation, response blocking, physical guidance, access restriction, or a treatment change.

MSWO measures ordered selection in a defined array

In a multiple-stimulus-without-replacement assessment, several candidates are available at once. After a defined selection and arranged access, the selected candidate leaves the array for that session. The remaining candidates are presented again under the written rearrangement rule.

Selection order can describe relative preference within that candidate set and procedure version. Yet it cannot establish why an option was selected, whether preference will persist, or whether the option will increase another behavior when delivered contingently.

In a small foundational comparison, DeLeon and Iwata evaluated paired stimulus, multiple stimulus with replacement, and MSWO with seven participants. MSWO was more efficient than paired stimulus in that arrangement and produced moderately to highly correlated ranks. This result does not make the method universally suitable.

Purpose, candidate, and participation card

The array should come after the assessment question. Keep client-nominated options and rejected options visible so a tidy ranking does not erase participation.

The ASHA AAC Practice Portal describes direct and indirect access methods. The ASHA communication-access framework emphasizes asking about communication preferences and allowing participation. A familiar device, adapted pointer, partner-assisted scanning sequence, or extra processing time belongs in the access plan.

Define the session and selection rules prospectively

The worksheet records the qualified procedure actually selected. No universal array size, selection window, access duration, rearrangement, stop rule, or number of sessions comes from this form.

An unavailable candidate, inaccessible array, changed representation, early staff cue, failed access delivery, equipment problem, or health concern may make a session or selection invalid under the written rule. Preserve what happened. Do not push the person to complete the array so the spreadsheet looks full.

An implementation self-instruction study specified observable MSWO steps and rules for no selection and simultaneous selection. That work supports measuring fidelity. Its exact procedures are not automatic instructions for a new client.

Position tracking remains useful even when the array is rearranged after each selection. Record what the person actually saw or could reach, not merely the intended order. A picture, object, activity card, or video can differ in discrimination and response effort from the activity it represents.

A video-based preference-assessment investigation evaluated representation and discrimination skills in a specific arrangement. It illustrates why representational access belongs in the record. That investigation cannot validate every picture or video array.

Keep the raw order. If an item reappears after selection by mistake, mark the procedure mismatch. If access was not delivered as arranged, do not quietly leave the row valid. If the person stops, honor that communication and retain the partial session under the prospective rule.

Rank, exposure, and access are different measures

In a complete MSWO session, every candidate is selected once. Raw selection counts can therefore be identical even when order differs. Earlier-selected candidates also have fewer availability opportunities because they leave the array sooner.

Avoid converting rank into an unsupported percentage. A median rank summarizes order but does not show stability, pairwise preference, magnitude, or reinforcement. Report partial and invalid sessions according to the prewritten rule rather than averaging them into a complete hierarchy.

Fictional community-library example

Noah is a fictional library volunteer choosing among six break activities, coded A through F. Noah reviewed accessible samples and labels, used a tablet-based communication system, and kept a familiar visual schedule. The team planned five MSWO sessions. The example tests arithmetic, not the candidate set or clinical method.

One session was invalid before the first selection because option C changed and its adapted access was unavailable. Four valid sessions remained. Valid-session coverage was 4 / 5 x 100 = 80.0%. Each valid session included six selections, for 4 x 6 = 24 selections.

The rank sums reconcile to the availability opportunities. Item A was present for five selection opportunities across the four sessions because it usually left first. Item F remained available for 23 opportunities because it usually left last. Every item was selected four times, so the raw selection counts alone cannot distinguish their order.

Access was delivered as arranged after 22 of 24 selections. Descriptive implementation was 22 / 24 x 100 = 91.7%. Two access mismatches require review before interpreting later selection order. They are not evidence that an activity lost preference.

The medians describe this array and version. They do not establish stable preference outside the library, a meaningful difference between adjacent ranks, or a reinforcing effect. A separate qualified evaluation would be needed for a different question.

A 10-component checklist was applied to 12 fictional observations, yielding 10 x 12 = 120 component opportunities. Across those opportunities, reviewers marked 114 correct and six mismatches, with 114 + 6 = 120. Descriptive fidelity was 114 / 120 x 100 = 95.0%.

Review the mismatch, not only the percentage. A missing option, inaccessible selection method, unhonored stop request, or changed access duration can affect validity even when most steps were correct. Procedural fidelity does not prove suitability, preference, benefit, or safety.

An MSWO classroom-activity study found that ranked activities predicted some responding in its school arrangement, with individual differences. A short-versus-extended access study found notably different hierarchies for one of two participants. Those results support recording duration, context, and change over time.

The SPADS decision model organizes considerations for format selection. The model supplies no validated threshold for changing care. Reopen the question when candidates, access, setting, health, motivation, or direct feedback changes.

Keep prior versions and raw session rows. A changed candidate set, representation, access duration, communication method, array size, setting, or stop rule creates a changed condition. Do not merge unlike versions into one rank.
